Tower Model

Previous pageNext page

This model contains the 22 MW wind turbine supported by a tower only. As the study is focused on the aeroelastic response, the turbine is fixed at its base, and no hydrodynamic effects are considered. The tower model is analysed in both operational and parked states.

•Operational case. The operational case formed the basis of the original example in Flexcom, and these results include a code-to-code comparison of simulation models built using OpenFAST, OrcaFlex and Flexcom. Full details of these numerical models and the benchmarking exercise may be found in Britton et. al., 2025. Consistent with the copyright agreement, the authors hereby acknowledge ASME as the original publisher and copyright holder.

•Parked Braked case. This model considers the turbine in a parked state, with the rotor prevented from spinning. This state would typically be used during turbine maintenance so that engineers can work safely.

•Parked Idling case. This model considers the turbine in a parked state, with the rotor free to spin slowly although the generator is not generating any power. This state would typically be used during high winds.

Note that the operational cases were analysed using OpenFAST BeamDyn, while the parked cases were analysed using OpenFAST ElastoDyn.
