L05 – Stiesdal Tetraspar (OC6)

Previous pageNext page

OC6 (Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration, Continued, with Correlation and unCertainty) is an international research project operated under the IEA (International Energy Agency) Wind Task 30 and coordinated by NREL. It is focused on verifying and validating numerical modelling tools used in the analysis of floating offshore wind systems. OC6 Phase IV considers a novel floating wind design with a streamlined floating support structure, the Stiesdal Tetraspar, different from traditional FOWT designs (Bergua et al., 2023). Numerical simulations are based on a full-scale demonstrator version of the FOWT concept hosting a 3.6-MW turbine, which has been deployed offshore and is fully operational since 2021. Results from the numerical model are validated by comparisons with experimental data from a 1:43 Froude-scale test performed in the University of Maine’s Ocean Engineering Laboratory.

The Results section presents a brief summary of a code-to-code comparison of simulation models built using OpenFAST and Flexcom, benchmarked against experimental data obtained from the University of Maine (Borg et. al, 2019). Full details of the numerical models and the benchmarking exercise may be found in the technical paper (Conway et al., 2024). The overall layout of this example is as follows:

Introduction gives an overview of OC6 Phase IV, the Stiesdal Tetraspar, the 1:43 scale model, and the load cases simulated in the test tank.

Model Building outlines the Flexcom model of the Tetraspar.

Results presents some Flexcom results alongside those from another OC6 participant (NREL’s ‘first team’) and with experimental data obtained from the University of Maine.
