Hoop Stress

Previous pageNext page

Hoop stress is based on Lamé's equation for a thick-walled cylinder using the following equation:

               (1)

Here σh is hoop stress, Ri and Ro are the effective internal and outer radii respectively, and Pi and Po are the internal and external pressures respectively. R is the radial position along the cross-section. You can request hoop stress at the inner (Location=1) or outer (Location=2) surfaces. If you do not specify a location parameter, Flexcom computes the hoop stress at the inner and outer surfaces, and outputs the larger of the two values (which occurs at the inner surface).
