The axial strain is calculated using the equation:

               (1)

where and are Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio, respectively. The stresses are defined in Axial Stress (Eq.1) and Von Mises Stress (Standard Method) (Eq.1). The sum of the radial and the hoop stresses is defined as:

                               (2)

Substituting Equation (2) into Equation (1), the axial strain equation becomes:

                       (3)

The definition of σp from Von Mises Stress (Standard Method) can be written in terms of areas as:

                       (4)

Substituting Axial Stress (Eq.1) and Equation (4) into Equation (3) expression for the axial strain then becomes:

       (5)
